A MEETING OF PAST AND PRESENT

In 1997, the Commission for Women engaged in a study of female deacons in the history of the Church. Articles at that time were being written questioning the feasibility of ordaining women to the diaconate. During that year of study we examined historical perspectives, canonical implications, the permanent diaconate and its ministry and articles dealing with the thinking regarding the female diaconate in today’s Church.

Shortly after completion of our study, Phyllis Zagano, a well-known researcher and author of articles advocating for women in this ministry spoke at Holy Cross College. This event was attended by several members of the Women’s Commission armed with a copy of our study which was given to Phyllis.

Phyllis Zagano revisited our study a few years ago and some communication regarding our research followed. Phyllis was one of twelve members of a commission appointed by Pope Francis who met in Rome for the purpose of discussing and making recommendations on this issue.

And so twenty years later, our Commission for Women looked at this topic once again--this time reading translated essays written by outstanding international theologians. The book is entitled, “Women Deacons? Essays with Answers.” It was edited by Phyllis Zagano.

As you read this, what are you thinking? Are you asking the following questions?

• Were women ordained deaconesses in the Church at one time?
• If so, were their duties equivalent to those of male deacons?
• Would female deacons be of benefit to our Church?
• What would their ministry entail?

The Commission for Women is responding to Phyllis Zagano’s suggestion to women in the United States to express their opinions to their bishop in writing regarding female deacons in our Catholic church.
