“Truly I tell you, just as you did it to one of the least of these who are members of my family, you did it to me.” ~ Matthew 25:40
The Social Justice Subcommittee was formed in March 2009 as a result of ongoing discussions which consistently arose at Diocesan Pastoral Council quarterly meetings on matters of social justice. In particular at that time was the issue of the worst economic recession since the Great Depression and the resultant rising unemployment rate. It was felt by many DPC members that a proactive approach was needed in order to discern, discuss and take action in response to issues of social justice. With the approval and support of Bishop Robert J. McManus, this subcommittee was formed.
The Diocesan Pastoral Council’s Social Justice subcommittee is a resource in and for the Diocese of Worcester endeavoring to raise and influence the social conscious within the diocese in accord with Gospel values and the rich heritage of Catholic social teaching that is part of our faith. With the Holy Spirit’s inspiration, the Social Justice subcommittee, through advocacy, prayerful support, and charitable works for those in need, will implement and/or support programs/events that reflect Catholic teaching on social justice. By modeling lessons taught by Jesus Christ, the Social Justice subcommittee, with compassion and concern for those who struggle with injustice and violence, will promote peace and non-violence.
