Dear Friends in Christ,
Not since Hurricane Katrina have our brothers and sisters in Louisiana faced such horrific flooding. The toll it took in the loss of hundreds of lives was compounded by the displacement of over 100,000 people from as many as 60,000 homes which have been damaged, many beyond repair. Faced with the loss of their worldly possessions and, in some cases, economic livelihood, left thousands of families have been left feeling isolated and fearful. As members of the body of Christ, it is our mission to bring them hope and mercy through local Catholic institutions and the assistance of Catholic Charities USA.
Archbishop Kurtz, president of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, has called for a nationwide collection during the month of September to assist Catholic Charities in its efforts with local parishes and agencies. I join my voice with his in asking for your support for a special collection to be taken up on the weekend of September 18 in the Diocese of Worcester. All donations will be forwarded to the national office coordinating relief. Any person who may not have an opportunity to donate in a parish can make an online donation to Catholic Charities USA on the web at catholiccharitiesusa.org.
The people of our diocese have always demonstrated their great spirit of compassion and mercy in the face of national and international disasters. I ask that you prayerfully consider joining the Church in being a visible witness to the healing presence of Jesus alive in the world. Thank you for your support.
With every prayerful best wish, I remain
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Most Reverend Robert J. McManus
Bishop of Worcester
